About the BAYFL

In 1991, a group of individuals noticed that few youth were playing football in the Town of Brunswick. They decided to do something about it and started a youth sports program for middle school aged children. The Brunswick Youth Football League was founded. Its original purpose was to develop a youth football program which might benefit the high school football team by giving youth football experience and benefit the community by giving the youth something positive to do.

As time went on, the organization changed its name to the Brunswick Area Youth Football League and it grew in size and scope. A cheering program was added and more girls became involved (girls have always allowed to play football but take advantage of this opportunity). Other changes were that the group began to serve youth from more towns than just Brunswick and it began to offer the program to children as young as age 6.

In 2008, the football camp had 99 participants, fall football had 228 participants, fall cheering had 49 participants and winter cheering had 16 participants.

In 2009, and in collaboration with Friends of Mt. Ararat Football, BAYFL first offered its program to the 6th — 8th grade students of the Mt. Ararat Middle School. With the addition of the Mt. Ararat Middle School participants BAYFL provides youth football and cheering to students from the towns of Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Durham, Harpswell and Topsham (and occasional individuals from other towns) for boys and girls in the 6th — 8th grades.

The most important change which has happened through the years is that has become clear that football is a means to an end rather than an end in itself — the primary focus of BAYFL has become developing character and teaching sportsmanship. Football and cheering are merely the activities used to teach these values.
